it might not be worth it. when the economy is bad, lawyers do their own work plus paralegal work.

Just the opposite. Paralegals are hired when the firm doesn't want to pay lawyers. Its a great career.

That being said..my friend went to stenotype academy...

I have friends who are paralegals. None of them went to a course. They were trained on the job.
It might not be worth it.

Thanks all.

I happen to have dealt with a law firm lately, and the paralegals have done it all.

Are there any organizations in Brooklyn or NYC giving these courses for free or at low cost?

I used to work for an attorney who paid his best secretaries for their paralegal training. I suggest you start looking for a job as a secretary for a private lawyer. You'll learn a lot, possibly enough to become a paralegal. Unfortunately, I was still only a secretary after 8 years because I wasn't good enough. The attorney never paid for my paralegal education, but he paid for same of his other secretaries.

You're welcome.

By the way, one of my friends used to be a paralegal and now works as a regular secretary. Why, you ask? Because of Shabbos. She left her employment with a frum attorney and then tried seeking paralegal work for a secular law firm. They would NEVER even consider letting her leave early on a Friday afternoon. So she ended up as a regular secretary for a frum office.

The frum attorney I used to work for replaced me with a non-Jewish woman who can stay later on Fridays. He wouldn't tell her to work on Shabbos, but if she chose on her own to stay until 5 p.m. on a Friday afternoon in December, then she was allowed to.

If you start out as a regular secretary and work your way up to an office manager, you can do quite well. As a frum woman, there are very few paralegal positions that are flexible enough.

Another frum friend of mine who is a paralegal stays at her law office until 10 p.m. Thursday nights so she can take off on Fridays. She is very fortunate that her boss is flexible in this regard.

Spelling, punctuation and grammar is a must. The attorney I used to work for doesn't hire graduates of paralegal schools because most of them have no grasp of proper English. If you are hired to type up a document, spell check will not tag "descendent" in place of "decedent".

Just try getting a job as a regular secretary for a frum office.
