Is the name Mariam/Maryam the same as Miriam?

I don't think so.

My great-great grandmother had a sister Mariam, and I know some of her descendants today who have that name. I don't think they consider it the same as Miriam.

OTOH not sure I would name two daughters in the same family with Miriam and Mariam.

It's one of those names with similar root probably, but different name.

All the Mariams I know are Arab.

Is this name used in Sfardi communities?

Sefardi here.
Never heard of anyone in our communities with that name.

What would you call her? Is the grandmother Miriam going to be upset about it?

Hungarian descent here. My great-great-grandmother had a sister Mariam, as I posted. She also had a daughter Miriam, now that I think of it. I do not think Mariam is Miriam for Hungarians. Two different names. Root could be the same, but Hungarians have both Mariams and Miriams.

Both Mariam and Miriam mentioned above were from Chassidish Hungarian families.

My family is VERY into names, ie naming the exact name after someone. We named miriam after a Maryam and they agreed it was the same name. They said in Russia Miriams were called maryam

Mariam is the second name and we would call by first name.
I’ll have to feel out the grandparents.
(And probably also ask rav.)

The Lashon Kodesh name for Mariam is the same as Miriam and it's the Hungarian pronunciation for Miriam.
