When I have needed a good specialist, I ask my Primary Care Physician or the specialist I am using for the condition which needs operating on.

I then find out where the doctor went to school; where they did their residency; where they have privileges.

All things being equal the best doctors have privileges at the best hospitals and often the best hospitals have departments that are affiliated with them. How long have they been a surgeon? Are they Board certified?

If this is an elective surgery and not emergency, one would also do well to make an appointment with more than one surgeon. Meeting a surgeon is extremely helpful. This is especially true when there are different ways to perform a surgery - e.g. a hip replacement can be done using different methods and some have better outcomes.

I am in Los Angeles and Cedars Sinai is one of the best hospitals in the country. It is also closest to me. I use doctors who have privileges at Cedars - even if I am not planning a surgery.

Also Cedars has their own medical staff. When I needed orthopedic surgery, I wound up using a doctor who was part of Cedars Orthopedics Department/Practice.

Steven Stylianos, MD out of Columbia is amazing. Amazing bedside manners. 2 things though 1. I think he's only pediatrics but I'm not sure 2. He's the chief of pediatric surgery so it's pretty hard to get to him (that's why I think he only does pediatric) it's definitely worth trying to get into him.
