Usually a good barometer for me is if I havent used it in a year.. give away or throw out. This refers to house items but also my clothing. I tend to keep clothing for years that I have not used, so I try to implement this rule.

Minimal toys whatever fits in the shelves or toy box
Clothes that fit in drawers
Storage closet has a few boxes of baby clothes , sentimental stuff.
Books whatever fits in the shelves | My friend called this the "real estate" method. . Decide how much real estate to allot to each type of possession and keep only what you have the real estate for.
That part is easy. The hard part is deciding which items stay and which have to go. Letting go is hard if you're insecure about the future and "what if I need it in 20 years if there's an earthquake the day before my daughter's wedding" or "but it was expensive" or "but it was from Granny for my fifth birthday."

If I give in to the yetzer hara to acquire, I give the stuff away as soon as I get home. I had the fun of getting something for nothing, it served its purpose, no reason to keep it.

I don’t because she wrote them before kids.
Now she has kids and reassesses the whole concept

No system on earth will, in its entirety , suit all customers, but most systems have elements that you can apply. Ms. Kondo's " sparks joy" mantra leaves me cold (hey, it's socks, or screwdrivers, I find it hard to get excited about them, grateful though I am to have them) but her "filing cabinet" system of storing clothes in drawers was a game-changer.
This approach applies to all self-help manuals, buffet meals and indeed much of life in general: take only that which you can and will use and leave the rest for someone else.

Op was asking if Marie Kondo was a specific book.
Are you advertising for this author? You bumped up a dormant thread just to post about this author, even though the question was clearly not about this book/author.
