Should he have asked? Definitely not, but that doesn't change the fact it was a message I was unwittingly sending... |
Yes I think that’s the main reason not to wear it, more than denim or leopard print. I was shocked when my yeshivish friends bought leather skirts when we went shopping together. They didn’t get what was wrong with it and I didn’t want to tell them.

Oh come on. That’s like not letting your kids wear rainbows on their clothes because LGBTQ people decided to make it their symbol. The fact that some people have a leather kink doesn’t mean that I can’t wear leather skirts. Their dirty minds don’t control me.
Nonjewish people wear leather leggings as a normal part of their wardrobe, not as lingerie. It’s only controversial in terms of animal rights.

Leather skirts are in the category of animal prints and bright colors. If that's not the crowd where thats seen every day, that would explain it.

I wasn't sure. It's so hard to tell on some threads!

Beyond inappropriate of him to ask. Non jews wear tight leather and it doesn’t have to do with bdsm.

The fact is that for many, it's definitely a derivative of that kind of lifestyle.

Oh, I agree it was inappropriate.
But the point is this was in the early to mid '90s. I had no idea of the association but it seemed to be a known thing, not just a few individuals weird fixation... It could be the "language" of clothing has changed since the 90s (back then tattoos said something about a person and were a defiant statement, now they're considered "classy and tasteful")
