I have heard from a chassidishe friend the amount of 36.
One of my neighbors said 70-100
I want to do what is accepted in my circles (yeshivish)
I am not a person of big means so there is no reason to go overboard, but I don't want to be cheap on the rebbe...

Litvish Yeshivish?

(Technically, isn't an upsherin a chassidish minhag to begin with?)

yes - upsherins are done in the yeshivish crowd too.
My family didn't do them, but my husbands family did. Maybe because there is some chassidishe blood if you go back a few generations...
Can anyone give input?

Do you mean when the boy goes in and says, aleph, bais, etc.? We didn't give anything. You're supposed to?

I didn't do Upsherin yet but I think a tip for the rebbe would be nice,
I just remember my parents always giving something to the rebbe I would assume about 36-50 would be nice..

We gave $50 to the rebbe and to the menahl. He is a great menahl and so devoted so I was happy to give to him. I just want to add that my dss' were in school before upsherin already so we knew the rebbe well-not just a random visit.

When do usually go to the cheder to do the whole Aleph Bais thing? Before the boys haircut or after?

Is this thread about an upsheren or a hachnosa l'cheder?

I assume the latter since I haven't heard that a cheder rebbi takes part in a hair-cutting ceremony Confused

Its about hachnosa l'cheder that is done right after the upsherin.

I also never heard of giving money. Why? whats the big deal? why is it so much different than any birthday party?

Over here they're done simultaneously, and the cheder rebbi does partake in the ceremony.

The only thing I don't really understand in all this, is how do you know which Rebbi your son will have? There are so many classes per grade, aren't there?

many people have the "upsherin" in a classroom with a rebbie ... most just go into a classroom where the rebbie is known for saying alef-beis with the boy ... it is most definitely not just a chassidishe minhag ... I guess since I never did this I never heard if they tip or not ... it was chaotic enough for him to get his hair cut by all these "strange" adults at home ...

We gave $180. We were told by the menahel when we called that we should give "something"- We gave more than we might have otherwise because we know this rebbe and he is mamesh a tzaddik nistar, and he can probably use the money.
I am still sorry we didn't give more.

In our cheider there is one Rebbe who does the hachnosa, regardless of whom the boy will have next year. There are 2 classes in our cheider.

The hachnosa l'cheder takes place during class time which the Rebbi is getting paid for. Why should there be any extra money? Confused
