We are redoing our entryway. Our house is a typical high ranch aka bilevel where the entrance is a small landing for the stairs that lead you either upstairs to the main level or downstairs to the playroom/guest room etc.

There was linoleum flooring till now and we want to upgrade. Tile makes the most sense as it's durable and waterproof with all the snow, rain, and mud that comes in. But I'm afraid because all my babies fall down the stairs at some point. Some a few times. Until they learn to go down (even before walking, I teach them to go down the stairs). If a kid takes a fall down a half flight of stairs and lands on his head on tile, I'm afraid. Is there any tile that is softer for a fall ch"v.

I don't want carpet for many many reasons. I'm not against having a rug (on top of whatever flooring we'd install) but it'll be at the door, not at the bottom of the stairs.

We were considering vinyl tile. Is it durable? Pretty?

Any other options out there that we didn't consider?

Vinyl can be durable but imo doesn't look as nice.

How many steps would they fall down. I think I'd honestly discuss the concern with the pediatrician before deciding.
