This week's installment mentioned that the cancer was probably caused by a procedure she had as a baby. I don't remember details about the procedure, can anyone enlighten?

Also wondering about this, I missed that week.

It was mentioned in a previous chapter. They were told that cancer is a very rare side effect many years down the line. They were very torn, but after consulting with doctors and Rabbanim they were advised to go ahead. Says it was an agonizing decision, but they followed medical and Rabbinic advice.

This is not the bungalow colony story that was fiction. There are real people with feelings behind this true life story.
Again, I don’t know them and I’m not part of their community. I’m just innocently pointing this out.

We all have a story to tell.
My life would make an interesting book and if I would be brave enough to have it written about, I wouldn’t want to hear people’s criticism when they don’t know everything.
You have to realize that there’s no anonymity here -so there are certain things the author just can’t share.

Obviously that's the intention but many people with different perspectives are reading it. Our thoughts can't be controlled. My life story can take up a book a few inches thick. I'm not publishing it because I don't want people to analyze it from every angle. I choose with whom to share my trials when I need support and validation. Otherwise it back fires. Sharing your life story in a magazine involves the risk of people discussing your story. Otherwise why would ami publish it?

What was the procedure? What was it for?

I don’t think it was for her hand but it had something to do with her condition

Wow, I never knew the Fontan carries with it a risk of Liver Cancer years later. What an agonizing decision for parents or family members. Also isn’t the Fontan a necessary procedure and not so optional?

Couldn't read this week without crying.
It was too heart wrenching. The way Simi didn't want to let go of her mother's hand. The way her mother was sobbing after she was wheeled into the OR.
It was too much Crying
And especially after reading here on this thread that she didn't survive. I would have been hoping Simi survived.
Did she not survive the surgery?

Same. Felt guilty to cry on Shabbos but couldn't help it.

The procedure was still in trial at the time she had it done. It was way more dangerous & risky than it is now, and it came with more potential side effects as it does now. It was a more complicated procedure back then.

I find it a little odd that their is barely any mention of her husband. Is he not there with her while going into surgery?

Part of being brave is facing the criticism, because it is inevitable. No one puts anything out into the public without knowing there is a possibility of critics coming their way. Nobody intends to be criticized but that’s life, and you can’t say that something can’t be discussed when it’s being put out there for entertainment purposes, in a magazine

If you google Fontana procedure and liver cancer, there are many published instances of people getting it years later. And published studies saying there is an increased risk later in life

Not sure what you googled

Her mother is telling the story, so it's natural that she concentrates on her own feelings
