Mismatched dinnerware: Yay or Nay?
That's such a great idea! I wish I'd thought of that!

Are you serious? No way! That's socially off...

Need all the Imamother opinions:

I need to replace my Shabbos dishes and have been on the hunt for a while, but everything is either expensive or boring. I was in Home Goods the other day and got the craziest idea:

Get dinner and salad plates that are all the same color and style but have different designs. They have a bunch of different options of white or cream plates that all have different patterns around the rim. The goal is for it to look mismatched but cohesive.

Will this look insane? Let me know please.

Thanks for responding! What do you mean by the bolded?

I'm not a huge style person, mostly because it's a very subjective area, so I'd appreciate specific ideas.

I personally don't go for it but you can try. Why don't you get most of them the same? Maybe they have more in stock of the stuff?

It's one of those things where it can look cool or look very off.
You have to know yourself if you have a knack for these things or not.

done right means that unless you are super cool, and have all the other accessories to pull it off, just don’t do it. it won’t have the cool effect of planned mismatched. it will just look mismatched.

Very much this. Maybe you can go with a friend whose taste you trust to help you choose. Definitely has potential!!

Hadn't thought to ask. Thanks.
But mostly because im indecisive and I don't like any one style to commit to just that.

Yea, I totally get this. I'm not really an accessories kind of person and I don't have room to store it all.

My mother bought a set of coffee cups like that, and got masses of compliments on them.

I would sooner do 2 shades of the same color before mismatching patterns. Say dark blue dinner plates and light blue salad plates. Then get co-ordinating napkins and glasses.

Personally mismatched plates etc only works in magazine tablescapes with flowers that are well over $100 and cutlery and tablelinens to go with it. It's a one time look not a classic week after week look...

It could look cool. I'd get all the same chargers to pull it together.

I would not mix white with cream dishes, If you want different designs, I would pick two and alternate dishes, as long as there is some color or design that coordinates them together. It might look like you are blending two sets.
Having 10 or 12 dishes on the table, and all 10 or 12 with different designs, is just not my cuppa tea. Even if they are all the same color scheme.
But if you like it, go for it.

There was a woman who proudly told her dinner guest,

My China is hand painted, no two are exactly the same.

The guest said sympatheticly,

Don't worry, Dear. No one will notice.

I love the look of my mismatched glasses, no two are the same at my table for 15!
I think diff designs of salad plates can look very chic if they are the same shade of white and everything else is clearly a set.
