We're looking to live in the U.S., but we're not sure about all the communities. We're just plain frum. We're not MO or yeshivish. My dh wears jeans and shorts, but not exclusively Wink . I cover my hair, but wear slits Confused . We have school age children, so school is important now. I personally don't like the cold, but we can't have everything.

Can you tell me about your community, please? And why we should move there LOL ?
Thank you!!!!

What types of schools are there and type of student body?
Approx. how much is tuition and do they give breaks?
I'm not asking about a mikveh because we're only interested in an established community.
What's the kosher meat availability? Cholov Yisroel is not a problem, because we don't only eat c"y.
Are there kosher restaurants or take-outs?
How many shuls are there and what kinds? What kind of people? We daven nisuch sefard and my husband always ends up in a shul with the same type of crowd as we are, but the rabbi is usually chassidish.
Is it a friendly community?
What is the living situation, price of houses, apt, etc.?
Is it safe to walk around at night?
What is average median income? What do most people do for a living?
Are most of the people from there originally or elsewhere?
Is there any reason not to move there?
Are there crazy politics in the community?
Do the people get along, jews with other jews and the jews with the non jews?
What's the weather like?
Are there camps available in the summertime?
Are there parks and places to go to on Sundays?
Is there an eruv?
Is there anti-semitism?
How are the doctors there?
Does the state offer any sort of insurance?
About how much is health insurance there?

I got most of these questions from Tamiri and Dillie (thank you) from the thread, questions to ask before you see a community.

Do you NEED a car?

many of your questions are hard to answer. my community was safe to walk around in until this year. there are crazy politics in many communities, even the close knit ones. what things are the most important to you?

The schools and the friendliness of the community. I like close, but enough distance. Know what I mean?

there's the rub. the cost of living is lower in places where people get paid less & often the economy is not too good as well. the city I live in you can buy a house for 150-250k easily, the utilities are lower than most places but the job market is not the best and you must have a car. there are always exceptions. it is very easy to get a health care job here, but you said your dh has never been to college. so that doesn't help him much unless he wants to clean floors, bedpans or work in the kitchen.

I would say Baltimore. It is a very mixed community with both Yeshivish and MO, low housing prices, lots of kosher food, plenty of shuls to choose from, and several schools.

cleveland has 3 choices of schools & 3 communities some of which are a mix
cheap housing (unless you want expensive)
need car
it snows
available kosher foods
jobs not so easy to come by
a variety of shuls
some eat out including the first kosher subway (but this is not ny)
every community has it's politics - if you get involved - and if you don't it goes unnoticed

didn't you start a thread a while back about how bad the politics are in chicago? it isn't very cheap to live there either. besides, I said skokie, that should count for something.
