They’re getting AC in all their dining rooms and in the campus bunkhouses.
Younger pioneers are getting bathrooms and showers IN their bunkhouses!!!!

I’m not sure how I feel about all these changes (and what they say about the current generation’s ability to “rough it” or be “no frills” 😏)

It may be the end of an era but for what they charge nowadays they probably need to make these upgrades to justify the costs. I calculated the costs for younger pioneers this coming summer and going for 1 half, which is just barely 3 weeks (3 weeks and 1 day if you include the day they go up and the day they go home which aren't even really days of camp so really less than 3 weeks of actual full camp days) is nearly $4,500! I don't think any other camps are that pricey.

I think so. Although bathrooms in the bunkhouses wouldn’t be relevant to that. I think kids are just more “fragile” nowadays and can’t tolerate some of the difficulties we cheerfully put up with. It is what it is 🤷‍♀️

Sternberg used to be a federation camp. It was the cheapest camp in the mountains.

Now it's one of the more expensive camps. For the price they are charging, they need to upgrade.

I doubt it has much to do with kids ability to rough it.

It's not the idea of camp having a/c. It's the idea of Sternberg having it.

For a long time, it was a simple place, where the joy wasn't in cushy surroundings, and the girls who went took pride in their ability to handle cold showers, long walks to the dining hall, and adventurous boat trips.

DW the AC won't make it too cushy, they'll be just fine

Can’t have it both ways. If the camp has evolved to charge more than the others, it can’t expect to get away with offering so much less.

Why can’t camps be lower maintenance and charge accordingly?? Who are they making happy?

I miss my Sternberg days so much! But it must have already been a different place since Rabbi Greenwald a’h passed away… good times, good memories…

I felt like this when they did the campus bunks with the single beds and half walls to make little cubicles, and put rotating fans up. And then they took away the tire park.

Now... AC in the dining rooms is overdue. People used to not eat on really hot days. And you used to be able to be an AD instead of a Pioneer and have bathrooms in the bunkhosues. And there used to be less bears, which are a real issue when going to the bathroom outside at night. But I do hear you on the AC in the bunks. May be needed, but.... yeah.
