My brand new daughter in law birthday is coming up. I didn’t get a chance to know her well since they live in Israel. I want to get her a special gift for her first birthday in our family. My older sister suggested I get her a nice piece of jewelry but how can that work when I’m so far away ? (And I don’t really know her taste )
Any ideas for this new mother in law ?

Send her to Jewelry store with a specific budget or call the store in advance with a budget. Or give your son the budget.

Give your son a budget and ask him to take her to a store she likes and pick out something from you. Maybe she wants a new bag or a new dress for the winter, or maybe she'd rather try a new restaurant.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
I’m not sure I want her to know how much I’m willing to spend. Are there any gifts I can arrange to send her that are neutral/u iversally liked and exchangeable ?

I think there is an English speaking lady in Ramat Shlomo, Jerusalem with a really nice jewelry store in her house. You could contact her and tell her your range and ask her to set aside pieces in that range so your dil can come choose without knowing the price tag. You can pay the lady directly with your cc.

Now if you think I have this lady’s contact info, then….

if she exchanges a gift you bought she will know in 1 second how much you spent.
Why can't your son ask her what she would like in a certain price range?
I can tell you that I personally will always enjoy something I picked out myself much more than something my MIL picked out on a website.
Wouldn't you rather get her something she really wants and will enjoy rather than a random piece of jewelry that she may seldom or never wear?

What about a gift certificate for a judaica gift shop?
There are so many different options there for different personalities and she can choose anything - something to beautify her home, or something practical , etc

Oh no, by a budget I mean call the store and let them know, she won’t know.

Also in Israel it’s very common to buy a camera, vacuum, good iron, mixer, food processor as big gifts. So if she is missing any of these you can get her one of those.
