We ordered a helmet from Amazon and within a week of using it, my son was in an accident and yes the helmet did it's job. The accident was not my son's fault, and we are waiting to see what the other party's insurance will compensate. We don't know how long it will take

Is it wrong/unethical to return it to Amazon--it's eligible for return until the end of the month. It's not obviously damaged, but I know you are supposed to get a new helmet after any kind of crash.

How would you feel if the helmet was sold to someone else, and didn’t hold up well because it was in one accident already?
That’s your answer.

Don't return it. Write a good review and buy a new one.

I don't understand the question? You used it. It saved your son's life. Why would you return a used and damaged item now just because it's still in the return window? Pay them triple for it and buy a new one. I thought returns are for new items only Can't Believe It

I always thought you may return items that are *not used* and not worn.

I would frame the helmet and write on it "Thank you H-shem!" or a passuk

Would you return a empty jar of sour pickles because it is still in the return window but it already got used up?

This is the reason why companies restrict their return policies from certain zip codes (mentioned on imamother a long time ago)

Yes, that would be wrong/unethical or to put it another way, stealing.
You have purchased an item, it has been used and damaged by its use so that you would not use it again, you can't return it and ask for another one to also break.

Similarly, it is not OK to buy an item of clothing, wear it once for a simcha and then return as you no longer need it. This is also stealing.

This. Omg. Why is this a question? If it's good enough for anyone else's child, then it's good enough for yours! If it's not good enough then throw it out and buy a new one. Sheesh

Wow. Can't people respond nicely. Would you prefer OP not ask the question??
OP, I'd return something within the return window that was used but doesn't work out for me or breaks before it's time, but not something like this where is was used successfully and filled it's purpose. And I'd generally chat first to make sure it's ok ex shoes ripped within a month, child colored on item with sharpie and ruined it, etc.

You will return something your own child ruined???????

Wow I'm even more flabbergasted now.
Returns are there so if an item doesn't fit, isn't what you are looking for, not needed and is still unused you can return it or if the item is faulty (ripped shoes very soon after purchase if worn like shoes should be).

Misuse or mistreatment of an item hence causing it to be ruined is absolutely not what you should be returning.
If my 5 yr old would sit in the baby swing and breaks it even if it's only 1 week old I can not return the swing.
How on earth is the store responsible for your child ruining the item???
The only reason they are allowing you to return after you chat with them is that they are worried if they say no you will twist the story and let it out that they have terrible costumer service ruining their reputation.
Unfortunately there are many stores that have had this and many more don't want it happening to them.

No, no one should think this way. You use it , you pay for it!! BH op's son is ok! Now buy a new helmet or if she thinks it's still good enough then use that one. But to return it?! I don't get it , sorry.

Ok sorry maybe that was a bad example.
But it actually happened recently, and I have credit card purchase protection for exactly this situation. And when I tried making a claim they wanted proof that the store wouldn't accept the return. So I chatted and to my surprise Amazon did say to return it.

I don’t think I’ve ever been more shocked by a question in my life! Your son was literally saved by their helmet. It did its job and you would try to get your money back? I would be afraid that something very bad would happened to me if I would do something that horrible. It’s literally literally literally stealing. It’s not their fault that their helmet did it job but maybe it’s their fault.

It's definitely not Amazon's fault! Or the specific seller!

You do know that a real person owns this company and that they would be losing out. Most Amazon companies are run by individuals who are barely making a living. I know this because I try to sell Amazon for a long time and it’s not so simple. He’s really really hard these days to make a good living on it. And you know what even if it wasn’t hard That the job is to sell. It’s amazing how people try to get away with returning things. Just blown away and very sad by what the world has come to.
