We always got small gifts (chocolate etc). I don't think you give cash.

If you have them long enough and know them well enough on a close level, you buy them something you know they will enjoy, like a coffee mug or a scarf. Nothing more than $15.

Last year I made treats for them (cookies, brownies, truffles) and also gave each of them a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble. I'll probably figure out something different this year, not sure what. It'll involve some monetary gift and something else.

I've given chocolate- it seems like everyone loves chocolate. Godiva is expensive and not cholov yisroel, but you can get some really good chocolate. I usually write a really nice poem to express how thankful I am for all they do. A little gift or note goes a long way. (I'm a therapist and wish I would get a little note-- it means a lot- but parents tend to forget).

So, small gift, but what about gift card? How much do you think is appropriate to put on those? Like to amazon or b&n?

Not sure who you directed this question to, but I give right before x-mas, because they're Christian. In the case of one of my therapists, x-mas is celebrated in early January and not in December, but I give them all at the same time.

My dh doesn't know how to give small. One year, he put together a winter emergency car kit. Basically everything they would need if their car broke down.
