I went to an elite college-prep boarding school for a year (long story, it was not Jewish) tuition is currently 37k/year for boarding students.

Okay, but no one has to send their kids to elite prep schools, but frum Jews do have to send their kids to a Jewish school (or homeschool, but not everyone can do that).

Not only that, they have to send their kids to schools that are consistent with their hashkafos. Clarissa cannot take her kid on the subway to Mamabear's $2200 cheder in Williamsburg.

No, I know that. I would pay good money to watch Clarissa take her child to a Satmar cheder.

And I would pay money to watch the reaction of the cheder rebbe when she walks in with her child on the first day.

I think we should rather bombard a public school system with such a high enrollment of jewish kids they would have to bring in jewish teachers as well ... all for your taxes - I'd say better spent ...

You'll never get them to teach limudei kodesh in a public school in the USA. And if a Jewish teacher wants a job in a public school, nothing is stopping them from getting credentialed and working there. I don't know how many teachers in Jewish schools these days have the certificates and such needed to work in public schools.

never said anything about limudei kodesh - but simply the secular education could be for free ... then you gotta do the limudei kodesh and will be 1/2 the cost ... Idea

put on the right type of headcovering and its amazing how quickly you can resemble a williamsberg woman. Of course, clarissa would need some yiddish classes, or to modify her accent to blend in.

Yes, but if she blended in, it wouldn't be funny any more. I can do a scarily good Yiddish accent. I started doing it last night after I put on a turban and DH said I looked chassidish.

We're paying approximately $18,000 now for 2 1 year olds (combination of babysitter and daycare). The actual tuition we'll pay once they're in school will stay about the same, but our overall expenses will go up because the daycare covers until 5 but school ends at 3:30ish and then we're on our own. So I'm guessing we'll end up having to find a nanny-type person that will pick them up from school, take them home, and watch them until we get home.

I doubt it, given what I pay.

To the person who said that MO was going to collapse bc of high tuition and lack of MO teachers ... LOL. That was a joke, right? Most MO schools around here have grown exponentially over the past 20 years or so, and are now turning kids away. When DH was a kid, there were a large number of secular teachers at his MO school. Now they're all MO. The bigger problem -- if you can call it that -- is the large number of wonderful asst teachers who cannot be offered jobs due to low attrition.

But MO schools, as a rule, seem to have higher tuition than other schools. Since not all MO families are wealthy, where do the families that cannot afford to spend $20 or $30k per kid send their children to school?

answer: they don't have those children. People are having less kids then they want becasue of the cost of school.

I just looked it up online and the elementary school DH teaches at is $15000!!! But we're not getting that much $$$ from them at all Sad I know the other schools in our area are significantly more. Iy"H when we have children I don't plan on sending kids to those schools.

MO in my community generally have fewer children than I gather is the case of many women here, based upon my reading of various threads. I don't know if that's because of tuition. In our case, we were unable to have more, plain and simple; tuition didn't play a role.

I am aware of families that have received very substantial tution assistance. My niece, who was a teenage single mother, was offered a full scholarship for her son. (She turned it down.) I am aware of other families who would be unable to make more than a rudimentary Shabbat or Yom Tov (think rice and beans) without assistance from the community, but somehow manage to send their kids to day school. I've never pried into their finances, but I can only guess that there is substantial assistance available in those cases.
