No, it's not. For web developing and open source software, LAMP (Linux, Apache, Mysql, PHP/Perl/Python) is VERY powerful.
My personal computer is running Linux, by choice -- not just our servers. I don't freelance though

Especially with forums -- almost every single forum software I've ever looked at rely on PHP and MySQL.
.net is from microsoft, and I am not happy with propietary things usually. If something in MS is broken, you have to wait for MS to fix it. With PHP and MySQL, etc, you have a whole world of developers working on and tweaking and helping languages become better.
