Which lifestyle would you want to lead and why?
Explanations for your choices
Litvish-Lakewood type, Litvaks, Yekish and so on
Chasidish-Ger, Bobov, Satmar, Viene
Lubavich-Lubavich
Modern Chassidish or Heimish-Mixture of Modern and Chassidish. Could be from Ger, Bobov, Satmar, Viene too .More open to the outside world. Husbands still wear shtreimels and Chassidish Levush but women's dress, and everything else is more modernized.
MO-Young Isreal-Real Modern.
MO-Rabbi Hirsch-Orthodox with a touch of modernization.

If somebody can give better explanations then go ahead as I'm not sure if I gave good ones for all of them. I consider myself Modern chassidish.

Modern Chassidish-My husband wears Chassidish Levush like Shtreimel. I dress tznius but could wear longer skirts, denims etc.
I guess it means more lenient in certain ways

Why would we have to "choose" a lifestyle. I, for example, am Lubavitch. If I wanted to be Litvish, I would become Litvish. Why the intermediate step of "choosing"?

What would you choose to be if you had a choice from birth?
In other words.. which lifestyle appeals most to you.

I broke from the Conservative movement. My rav is Lubavitch. I keep a cholov yisroel/glatt kosher kitchen. I cover my head/hair. I observe taharas hamishpacha. I wear tznius clothing (skirts at the ankles/ tops and jackets below the elbow...I feel "uncovered" and therefore avoid v-neck or scoop neck shirts). What would I be considered?
(For what it is worth, I am still trying to figure this out for myself! Rolling Eyes )

I would consider myself a combination of MO - young israel and MO rav Hirsch. I live in israel and so I would consider myself dati leumi or even torani leumi!

I'm not sure and anyway I don't see a real difference between those labels unless someone is very Chassidish or very Modern.
The in betweens all look the same to me (except for men's Levush).
Would you be able to tell on women walking down the street in Boro Park if she's Chassidish, or Litvish, or just Orthodox?? I don't think I would again, unless they're really Chassidish or really modern.

Because I am not in a large frum community, and we all somewhat have to stick together here---one orthodox shul with a Lubav rabbi---it matters less here than in large communities. Do the labels really matter?

I am being completely sincere here...are there times when labels actually matter? (eating by someone, shidduch, etc.) I guessed at those examples, but do differences matter at specific times?

You are all so helpful...I learn so much from just reading you-all's posts!
Thanks! Wink

I'm just wondering if anyone around here is where they want to be. I don't mean people who are working on themselves to become better people. That is something we all should be striving for. But I get the feeling that there are lots of people that wish they were part of a different sect or level of frumkeit - whatever that means.

Just wondering why that is so - this thread sure screams "I wish I were someone else".

I for one, am thankfully, glad to be me.

I am very happy to be a Lubavitcher Chasid.

I do think labels are important (as I've mentioned elsewhere), as long as they are not used inappropriately (I.e., to divide and put down). But when they are used to state what someone's beliefs, opinions, and ideals are, it is a very positive thing in that you can then determine who an appropriate rav is, what are appropriate leisure activities, etc. etc.
