Does anyone know where the name "Reina" comes from? Is it Yiddish (meaning: clean) or Spanish (meaning: queen)?

My sister's name is Raynee. Here is where it came from: My mom had a good friend named Lorraine and they called her Raynee for short. She has a good friend named Reina, btw.

I know s/o named raena. The parents named her after a yiddish name, but they look at it more like an English name.
I know s/o else with the name Reina (actually of her. it's my sister's friend) I'd imagine it's prob. the yiddish version.

Thanks YALT. So then, what would it be in Hebrew? Does it mean physical clean (as in neat and clean) or "spiritual" clean (tahor?)

Reina means queen in Spanish. Regina which also has similar meaning used to be quite a popular name among sephardim (also used as english name for Rachel).

don't really understand your question. spelling? I think reish, 2x yud, nun, alef. I don't know if I ever heard it as a specifically hebrew name. but it can still be a possibility. After all, I always thought my name was yiddish, yet my teacher took points off my test for not spelling it correctly. She insisted it wasn't spelled the hebrew way, as she insisted my name is.

I don't know the origin, but I know of a Rayna, and I've always thought it's a gorgeous name.

It is both a yiddish name and a spanish name. In Yiddish it means clean/pure as in tahor and in spanish it does mean queen.

It was the name of my great-great grandmother. There was no Spanish descent that I know of, so I assume it was all yiddish for her :-).

That's interesting. I never knew it had yiddish roots too.
I always thought it was a name of Spanish origin.
I've met more than one frum person named Reina.
