Didn't it start as a skit on Carol's show?

This actually started early, like 50s. Lucy and Ricky were Murray Hill 5-9975

Recess was Chinese Jump rope and playing on playground equipment built on hard asphalt. There was an injury every recess, and there was always at least one child in the school with her arm in a cast or on crutches! Skipits were fun until they injured too many kids and got banned...lemon heads and Boston Baked Beans in little cardboard boxes were a coveted treat, and the crafty girls would spend recess making elaborate friendship bracelets from lanyard.

And having tonsils removed was definitely the surgery of choice for elementary aged kids, which they accomplished between learning about the dire importance of recycling to save the earth, and the importance of those little plastic eggs filled with silly putty (OT for sensory integration and hand strength before it was a thing!)

Some I'm not sure were mentioned:
Pagers - and when my father's was upgraded that he didn't simply receive a number of who wanted to speak to him, but we could speak to a live operator and send him a message! Then my father would have to find a payphone to call us back - he worked on the road in those days. Just today I was talking to my mother and asked her she managed all those years when she had no clue where my father was for hours and no way to get hold of him. She told me she would call shops on his route and ask them if they had seen him, and if he comes in to tell him to call!
Etch-a-sketch! They were so fun.
Trolls
Dummy necklaces (maybe Americans called it pacifier necklaces?)
Any brits here? - rumpler bars
Being allowed to take any food we wanted to school
Being able to park the car pretty much everywhere for free
Those hats, we called them streimel hats, they were wooly with a band of fur around the head and they tied under the chin. |
We called them beepers. Was the coolest thing when they came out

I remember when we started getting the "new" frozen gefilte fish rolls to cook. I don't think it was available where I grew up until the 80's.

MrsDash wrote: | Fisher Price Little People - Embarrassing story, but I thought they were officially called "Menschies." Discovered their real name a lot older than I will ever admit! |
I had a Fisher Price dollhouse growing up, and a Fisher price town set.
The town consisted of two rows of buildings, that you connected with a bridge that fit into the ends....it had a traffic light on it with a little button you could press which changed the "light" between red, yellow, and green (I think it was a little revolving thing inside...not electronic.)
The buildings were two stories each, and we had tons of accessories to furnish them. I particularly loved the dentist office, we had these little plastic chairs with a side "cup" attached that looked like the piece where you rinse your mouth.....The doors all had mail slots for "mail" and there was a mailbox.
OMG I found it online
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1.....D_BwE
https://www.ebay.com/itm/19288.....D_BwE
I had all of these! OMG that phone booth!
The dollhouse was similar to the Playmobil take-along look - it opened down the middle to two sides, and closed with a latch. It had two stories, and each floor had furniture you could set up - beds, tables, chairs, etc....The door opened and closed and there was a real bell you could pull and sound, of course not on Shabbos!
This is the one I had: https://www.ebay.com/itm/35367.....D_BwE
We had tons of "mentchies" (I knew that was a yiddish word) that were really round bodies with a hole in the center, no arms or legs, and a face on top. Girls (some pigtailed) and boys, taller ones were the adults, some had accessories (like a firehat for the fireman - there was a firestation in town but I don't remember details) or features (the adult with the mustache was our choice for the dentist).
We also had cars, a mailtruck, a firetruck, police car, ambulance and an airplane (and more, probably, that I don't remember). The seats had a center protruding piece so that the hollows of the "metchies" fit in side, so they could be seated.
I spent hours of imaginary play with this.

I remember seeing it for the first time at my sisters house in Lakewood in 1998. Had no clue what it was
(I remember the year because of how old I was at the time. )
