In the summer I moved from Crown Heights to East New York; a more subarban part of town.
Now, I'm from Virginia and certain sounds were part of my growing up, not necessarily part of nature, but DH, walking from shul late one evening, heard a definite NOT city noise.
PLease guess the sound/noise - no spam or value judgements, please!

SaraG, you do mean East New York Avenue, which is on the southern tip of Crown Heights. 
did you hear a cricket? 8)

I live in East New York, (I do not think I need to give my actual street address),......and yes, it was a CRICKET, of all noises!

I promise. I hear them all the time in the evenings when it's quiet. Thern my kids pointed to it on the outside of the window at the back of the house, ie-on the porch. They kept saying, "look at the green bug!"

I would not have been so excited about a cicada, you can believe me.
That's one of the reasons I was so glad to leave Virginia !!!!!!
