We've made quite a few kiddushim at home, B"H.
One way of presenting the food that someone did for me, was to place small boxes on the table under the cloth, to raise up certain platters. Another effective thing is to put up-side down lechaim cups as a kind of stand, and half-raise platters so that the food is tilted towards you. It looks very good if everything is on different levels and is very easy to achieve.

I think it is much nicer to have a kiddush at home where the mother (and hte guest of honour, if she will be awake - my dd fell alseep for her entire kiddush) can join in. If you have a kiddush in shul you may not be able to get there.

Dont worry choc moose. our community does not try and out do each other and, surprize, surprize, there also is no keeping up with the jonses here either. I know its hard to believe but this is a community full of ppl who dont have a low self esteem who might feel the need to do that. You do what you can to enhance your simcha the way you want with out breaking the bank, and trust me, shayna is not going overboard. Mazal Tov again Shayna
