Tristan and the sausages and mash.

The picalilli and the slab of fat.

Delivering a cow at night in the freezing cold.

Those were not really kids books but I also read them as a child/teen.

I knew my husband was a good shidduch when we could both quote James Herriot.

I love James Herriot but I only found out about him as an adult. Way too much animal-gyn for a kid. I would have freaked. Granted, if I had grown up on a farm, I guess it would all have seemed normal to me, but reading about bovine uterine prolapses would have been way too much.

Lol! I recall reading them as a pre-teen, maybe 12 or so. Around the time I'd outgrown Nancy Drew, et. al. I do remember skimming through things that began to get a big grisly.

However, vindication came in high school. I was part of a Knowledge Bowl kind of competition against another school, and we were asked to use the verb "farrow" in a sentence. I confidently pressed the buzzer and said, "The sow farrowed a litter of piglets." The FFA (Future Farmers of America) kids were a lot nicer to me after that. Thank you, Mr. Herriot!

I hadn't thought of Tristan and Siegried in years! I should really re-read them.

I loved reading the James Herriot books, even when I was a kid. But I have to admit that I enjoyed them a lot more as I grownup!

Another favorite that no one has mentioned is Cheaper by the Dozen and it's sequel Belles on their Toes.

I can't tell you the number of times I have reread them and they are still funny.

Yes.

And I'll admit to reading the Bobsey Twins and Nancy Drew. And Cherry Ames, although those were hard to find. Pippi Longstocking. The B is for Betsy books.

The ultimate slacker girl reading list, I guess.

My favorite though was probably The Phantom Tollbooth.

There was also a series of historical fiction books at the school library. The only one I remember is Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys, but there were maybe a dozen, and they were good.

All of a Kind Family.

My first chapter book was b is for Betsy 😀

Wasn't tristan the best? I read a biography on the real James Herriot - Alfred Wight - and they interviewed some of the neighbors for the book... one of the neighbors said about Tristan - "and only SLIGHTLY insane" lol.

James Herriot was a pen name?

I would love to read his biography. He was such a special person.

Yes, it was a pen name. There are two biographies - the one you want to read was written by his son. Really nice. Very impressive person, to be honest.
