What books or authors did you love growing up?

I grew up reading Yiddish and loved the Menachem Mendel old style books. Although the more contemporary Yiddish ones were more up to date, his stories about kidnapped children, counts, kings, princes and princesses captured my imagination like nothing else.
His vivid descriptions gave me a thirst for history and historical sights and are partially responsible for my wanderlust.

When I was 13 my father made me read The Chosen. It traumatized me a bit. Although well written

I also loved Watership Down!

Basically all fantasy/sci-fi
I love Harry Potter but those were published when I was an older teen/ early adult Wink

As a teen I was deeply affected by Rebecca by Daphne devora Maurier and Enders Game by Orson Scott Card

Loved all the Lucy Maud Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables, Emily of New Moon) Frances Hudgeson Burnet, (The Secret Garden & A little Princess) Noel Streatfeld. And "the Little House on the Prairie" Series. Still own those books till this day, although they are bit beaten up and well loved. Can't part with them just yet...

Many of my favorites were already mentioned. In addition, I enjoyed the Orphan Train Quartet series, books by Johanna Hurwitz, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.

Did I miss out the Chalet school? That and Enid Blyton were staples in my house. The school ones were my favourites - malory towers and St Clares. At one point my sister wrote a book set in a frum boarding school. We were all dying to go to boarding school and have midnight feasts!

My kids love a writer called Diane Wynne Jones. Fantasy/magic.

The Oz series (read them all!) were amazing.

When I got older, I discovered the whacky word of Shel Silverstein. A very funny book for adults is "Uncle Shelby's A, B, Z's" Keep out of reach of children!

Sue Barton! Thank you! I was trying to remember the name of the nurse books. Loved them.

Yes!! I bought some secondhand copies at book sales and can still reread them over and over. The Beany Malonr books were actually reprinted a few years ago.
