IKEA for the most part has excellent quality furniture - far better quality furniture than many more expensive lines.
I am not sure I would want an IKEA sofa but their desks, bookcases and storage units are fabulous.
They aren't hard to put together either. You just need someone to help you hold pieces while the other person screws them in and an ability to read directions.
Their kitchen cabinets are high quality as well although I would use a professional installer for those although IKEA cabinets use an installation method which is theoretically easier for non-professionals. You can actually buy fancier doors for IKEA cabinets from third parties.

How big of a place are they moving to?
If the place is not so big maybe don't by a lot of furniture I have seen people who must move out of their 1st apt. very fast because it was filled with to much furniture.
