My dh also doesn't listen to music until after Pessach to lag ba omer..
He says though that it's part of the things that weren't really done so much 30 or 40 years ago, like covering all the hair or being very detail oriented and so on. He also didn't think many women did it. He also says some allow Torah lyrics.

For the three weeks, from 17 tammuz to tisha be av he also doesn't listen to anything.

My DH doesn't understand why we still keep it this way nowaydays. Listening to (recorded) music is not a sign of intense happiness anymore in our day and age. Still, we don't listen to music between Pesach and Lag Baomer.
