Neat. Thanks for the explanation. Smile
You really had my head spinning there for a second. In the same post where you write about not learning, you throw in "sitra achara."
My first thought was: Freidasima's been learning Tanya?

Ummm, the Tanya isn't the only place where Sitra Achra is mentioned...

I don't think it is. That's just mainly where I know it from.
Are there any non-Kabbalah-based sefarim out there that teach about sitra achra? I'm curious to know.

My husband is not Chabad and I doubt very much whether he's ever learned Tanya. He has read other Kaballah based books though.

I'm sure he has.

Anyone have some kind of theory as to how the term "sitra achra" got out there?

First of all, GR, I don't learn today, or at least not much.

I've learned a heck of a lot in the past though...not that it helped me with anything...yes I have learned Tanya...and lots of other things...again, not that it got me anywhere or made my yiddishkeit stronger...just the opposite, I think that saying a simple tehilim and washing the floor so that my dh has a clean living room in which to learn makes my yiddishkeit a lot stronger than all the book learning that I had in the past...but that's neither here nor there.

Now to your question, modern Hebrew has lots of phrases and words from Jewish religious sources, that entered through the more intellectual press...including Sitra Achra which is a very common phrase among educated Israelis...

I've actually NEVER heard Israelis - educated or not - use the term Sitra Achra. Never, ever, ever. I worked in a secular, hi tech environment for 25 years.

Hang around with a bunch of intellectuals or pseudo intellectuals like the kinds you find in Yerushalayim and you will hear it non stop. That's what happens when some of my friends are secular medical doctors, professors, musicians, and newspaper reporters for Haaretz...
