I once lost my phone while walking and someone came by to return it. My license was in there so he knew where I lived. I wasn't home but he left his phone number with my neighbor. I called him when I got home to thank him and asked him to come back so I could give him something. When he came I realized he was a delivery guy on a bike who had picked it up and he barely spoke a word of English. He returned it complete with license and credit card inside. I gave him $50. It would have cost much more in both money and agmas nefesh had I not gotten it back.
I'm glad your son got his phone back and is safe and sound. I do think when someone makes the effort to do the right thing, you should try to compensate them and show them you appreciate their honesty.
