I was at the store the other day and was going to pick up some nail polish for my dd ... usually despite being a tom boy I have good taste in feminine things ... however, I felt like a boy - now how do we buy nail polish ...

Uh...just pick a color you like!
When I was a teen I used to try the colors on my nails before buying them.  Now I know what colors I like...I just buy and add to my collection.

the color always looks different on my nails than in the bottle. I go for a color I like and hope it won't look too different on me

it depends on the underlying color of the nail bed. my skin is so pink that anything in the pink family makes it look cheesy. I stick to lavender (gray family) which coupled with the pink tone looks like a feminine nude/pink color.
