I'm Sad
I was once an addict of his NYT column On Language
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Safire
He was an arbiter and guardian of the English Language...and I don't think there will be another like him..not in the internet generation.
I didn't know that 1) he was Jewish and 2) He was very pro-Israel...and was one of the few prominent people who said the Iraqi war (the first one)...would be quick and easy (the Lubavitcher Rebbe was saying this to a skeptical world)..
I missed the chance to correct his Latin once, (I would have framed something like that) but who cares..
I think he's the last of his kind...

What? No more cultured rants about the demise of the English language? Well, maybe Edwin Newman is still alive.

I always liked his columns. Had no idea he was Jewish!
