Someone pointed out somewhere, that if she had managed to slow the stroller down but not stop it, the baby would have been hit as it would have landed on the rail and not in between.
Really, the whole thing is miraculous; he was buckled in and so stayed with the stroller, and the momentum carried the stroller directly into the middle and not on either side.

This story leaves me shaking as I can easily see how it could have happened at a Melbourne station. Most of the stations are outside and therefore the platform settles into the ground somewhat and is not 100% level.
Could you imagine what would have happened to the baby in an umbrella stroller? Look at what happened to the sturdy jogging stroller (see this link):
