hindy, you also put in jachanun? and I thought I was the only weird one. Smile (they usually cook it overnight on a low temperature in the oven.)
I didn't know it was Yemenite. NEAT! My sister's friend's mother, who I think it Israeli, makes it. They sell it frozen in the grocer's section. Smile

My oldest 2 sons had a gannenet that was Temani (when we lived in Israel) that would bring in Jachnun every week. The gan was full of all these Ashkenazi children of Americans begging for Jachnun!

I put chickpeas in my cholent.

Mmmm chickpeas sound interesting.

I put turnips in my cholent sometimes instead of potatoes. Less carbs and they add a nice flavor.

By us, it's Hubby's job to make the cholent. He just loves it!! He used to make one at his dorm when he was in Yeshiva (before we got married)...

So, he puts in all kinds of interesting things:

First - we buy the crock-pot lineres - they make life so much easier!!!!
Then - beans, barley, onions, potatoes, meat, kishka.

Boiling water

and for the seasoning:
salt, pepper, garlic, paprika
BARBICUE SAUCE
DUCK SAUCE (HOT!!!)
KETCHUP
COKE

(sometimes, I'll throw in some chunks of: carrots, zucchini, sweet potato, and garlic cloves.

My MIL puts a whole chili pepper in hers, my FIL likes his cholent REALLY HOT!!!

I have read that celery reduces the gas beans produce. I do put some celery into the cholent sinse then. It seems to me as it actualy helps.
