I know this topic is a bit "shtussy" but I thought it was pretty funny that's why I'm posting it here.

Tom cruise (scientology wacko if you ask me) just gave birth to a girl and named her Suri claiming its the persian word meaning 'red rose' and jewish word meaning 'princess'.

On the radio the other day in persia- they got a kick out of it because suri in persia means RED (not rose) and in Israel they are laughing too since Suri does not mean Princess!!!

I know there's a SURI on here, perhaps she can give us some insight.

Suri is derived from Sarah, which does mean princess

Not every Suri is from Sara; at least one I know is from the word that means stone.

I always thought it was a nick name for Sara that really chassidish people use. I know in LUbavitch if their name is Sara they could be called Sari but other chassidium pronanounce the name Sura and use the nick name Suri

I think the Suri (from tsaraah) is the exception, rather than the rule.

Suri is not a traditional Lub. pronunciation of Sara anyway.

I was reading this and all I can think of is that I am thrilled to now know that my name Sara nicknamed to Sari means red rose besides princess. Hey that could be the very reason why I love red roses!!! Flower LOL

In Israel they are laughing their heads off because "suri" means "go away" in "high" ivrit.

My sister is Chaya Suri.. I never thought it's chasidish... I have a few cousins with that name and not all of them are chasidish but they are all called chaya sury..

not sure where chassidish comes into the picture-- Suri/surie are commonly used variations of the name Sarah, both in Chassidish and non chassidish circles.

Imho Suri = pet form of Sura, which is a Yiddish form of Sarah.
Tsuri = my rock.

I didn't mean that only chassidim have the nickname suri - I meant that with a chassidish accent, Sara would be Sura, hence Suri instead of let's say Sari - get it?

people used to give their kids english names (not me!) because non jews couldn't pronounce it & didn't want to seem different, but now they don't have to!! the non jews will be familiar with the jewish names since they're using it now! (another actress, gwyneth paltrow named her son moses)
