I will iyh be moving back to the states from Israel in a few months and will have to furnish a whole apartment from scratch. we dont own our own furniture in israel.
am looking for a few good stores in the NY area (brooklyn, manhattan, long island) that have reasonably priced, good quality furniture: beds, couch, dining room table and chairs, bookshelves,...basically everything.
would rather pay a little more for quality then get junk that wont last.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I agree with the Taubus suggestion! I just ordered a set from them for myself! I did tons of research, went to other stores to look at the same set (a non-jewish store as well) and they gave me the cheapest price by $300!!! Also, their delivery is cheap and they set up everything for you. Some places charge around $150 for that!
Some tips when you go...
1) Don't accept the first price they give you. Say "Is that the absolute best you can do for me? " , they will mostly likely give you a discount!
2) Ask them if they can charge you less if you pay cash
3) When buying a mattress ask specifically if they have had any problems with what you choose. I know the Gold bonds have caused them a lot of problems!
4) Ask for Pessy - Thats who I used - she was really nice!
Good Luck!
Oh, and here's the number - 718-871-7900 They are open from 11:00-6:00

if you're ok with used furniture, you can try craigslist.org
Used is not necessarily used until it's worn down to the bone. Sometimes people sell their furniture every 6 months or so for re-decorating purposes.
Anyway, since it's a website, you can check it out and see what you find, without the hassle or "wasted time" of leaving your house, driving, finding parking, etc.
Good luck.

Hi--don't know if you've considered this yet, but Ikea is fantastic, with really good prices (except on sofas--for some reason, those are pretty expensive).
