I want to make the chocolate pudding pie for shabbos. What do you use instead of milk? I dont have any soy milk but I heard that it does not set anyways.

I use a recipe in the purple cookbook for custard cream pie and make into a chocolate pudding pie.
1 baked 8-inch pie shell
filling:
1/2 c. sugar
3 T. flour
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
pinch of salt
1 1/2 c. non dairy creamer [I use soy milk]
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1 T. margarine
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 oz. melted chocolate chips [it says baking chocolate but this way you don't need to add sugar. if you'e using unsweetened chocolate add 1/4 c. sugar]
in sauce pan combine sugar, flour, cornstarch, salt.
put on low heat and add rest of the ingredients
keep stirring and it should turn into chocolate pudding filling.
the trick is not to take it off too soon or too late. It shouldn't be too runny but shouldn't be too thick or it will be chewy pudding.
I like this because a) the eggs are cooked and b) there's less chemicals than with the pudding mix.

I just saw this. I don't know why but soy milk does not set the instant (no cook) puddings. I've learned this the fun way

AHA! So that's why that banana pie a few years back didn't work
We had guests over... thank G-d they were close friends. We were all rolling with tears when we saw the state of the dessert

It also did not set my cooked pudding mix that I made for a pie. I brought it with us for Sahbbos and it was pretty uncomfortable...
