my newborn (2 weeks old) often sleeps with his eyes open. Not only during REM sleep when his eye balls move like mad, but sometimes it's hard to tell when he's awake and just staring into space b/c he's tired or if he's really sleeping. Is that normal? It looks really freaky!

My DH and many of his siblings (and their children) sleep with their eyes open (at least sometimes). As they get older it becomes easier to tell when they are sleeping because their eyes are only partially open. I was able to train my DH to stop doing it. When we were newlyweds it made me very nervous and he said I should just (partially) wake him and tell him to close them. After about 6months- 1yr he stopped doing it and since then it happens maybe once a year.
My dd looked like she might be starting this practice as a newborn so I just used to gently close her eyes embarrassed . Don't know if that's the right thing to do but she does sleep with her eyes closed now (she's 3yrs old) Very Happy
Hatzlacha!!

2 of mine do it. I don't know how common it is and never thought to ask about it.

Just out of curiosity, do they blink while sleeping? They do need to moisture their eyes.

It might be normal (meaning not dangerous) but it would definitely make me nervous and bring it up with the pediatrician.

One of my daughters has done that since she was an infant (she's a teen now). Other than scaring the babysitter half to death once when she was a toddler, it's never been a problem. My sister has always done it too. They close their eyes sometimes, then half-open them again while they sleep. It's a little creepy, but nothing bad.

I just remembered that my toddler sleeps with one eye not completely closed. He has a good reason though. One eye is smaller than the other, so the smaller one gets completely closed, while the other one doesn't.

I think its pretty normal - we call it "snake-eyes" when my baby does it...

My DD did it when she was quite old...about 7 or 8. It totally freaked my father out! I don't know if she still does it...I'll ask her DH! Wink
