Does anyone here have experience with both types to tell the difference? Is the padded rails one supposed to be better/safer/healthier/more comfortable for the baby/toddler than the unpadded one. Looking through the Net, I am a bit confused as to what type to choose. Of course, the padded one is much bulkier and wouldn't be my first choice if there's no real difference or advantage, but I really would like to hear what other mothers have experienced and think before going for anything.

I like unpadded better. Most babywearers do.
A good brand is sleepingbabyproductions.com
I like slings that are made from wraps.
There are different types of shoulders. You need to see which style works for you. I like the pleated shoulder on sbp.

Thanks a lot, Inspired. I was hoping for your opinion in particular as I noticed when conducting a search here how experienced and knowledgeable you are on the matter of babywearing.

I didn't like padded rails -- too bulky (I'm petite as well and I couldn't get it as tight as I would like).
In general, I like a tight/snug fit, and the cloth is usually comfy enough for babies without padding in any carrier...you can always put in a folded receiving blanket for more padding of the head if you desire.

Can I just vent about an article I read on Sunday about recalls, and it mentioned soft slings were recalled and should not be used. GRRRR!

Inspired, thanks for the links. I followed them and found very helpful.
Hashem Yaazor, what are soft slings? Are the padded rails ones considered soft slings that are being recalled?

I like the unpadded slings as well.
I love my maya wraps and my kissasling as well.
The Kissasling has a padded shoulder, which is nice once the child is larger. The Maya Wrap is completely unpadded and works very nicely.

Ring slings, when used properly, are safe. Make sure the baby is high enough that you can kiss his/her head as a baby, chin is not touching chest (should be able to put 2 fingers in between chin and chest), and in a check mark position vs a curled up C.

I saw a woman wearing that bag sling in WalMart the other day. I couldn't see the baby and the sling was worn really low. Didn't know about the recall but that thing looked very unsafe.

Now you know -- and you should tell them to stop wearing them. I wouldn't care what a stranger thought of me for saying something since I'll never see them again, but I do care about their baby.
