How do I know when my baby empties one breast while nursing? I know he is supposed to nurse one side to the end and then start the other side. Any advice?
Thanks!

Keep him on one side until he is no longer swallowing, even when you try compressing milk into his mouth. For many babies, one side is enough at a feeding...

Thanks. Now, how can I tell if he is swallowing? He seems to keep sucking, sometimes stronger, sometimes less so, but he also still falls asleep while nursing and I need to keep pushing him to continue.

Can you hear him?
Jack Newman calls it open mouth, pause, close mouth -- that pause is when milk is coming in.
If you squeeze milk in by compressing your breast, does he pick up speed? That's a sign there is still milk but it might be coming out slower at the end of the feeding...
