A much easier cake was what I actually did for my son's upsherin (that one was for a friend's)
You can do half size in a 9x13 pan for a smaller crowd.
made 2 double batches of rice krispies treats. roll into 2 cookie sheets to make flat. flip 1 out of pan, cover in layer of melter chocolate. put other layer ontop. cut out semicircle from top for tzitzis hole. Cover tzitzis in thin layer of marshmallow fluff. used a bit of icing & food coloring to draw strings & stripes with semicircle, I covered in melted choc & decorated like yarmulka.

I made a "yarmulka cake" piggy-backing off an idea for a Har Sinai cake.
9x13 baked brownie pan
Lined big glass bowl w/ saran wrap and sprayed well. Smushed brownie up sides. Filled inside with choc mousse (can do ice cream or plain whip). Freeze. Remove cake by lifting up plastic wrap. Frost. Decorate w/ lentils.
I also made black and white cookies decorated as faces w/ yarmulkas.
Pekelach had scissors that were gotten 3/99 cents - a cute touch.
Place cards were very cute - let's see if I can describe. I had bentchers made w/ my son's pic in front. I made tzitzis out of index cards and string and wrote the names on the tzitzis and taped to bentcher.
