take a digital picture. dump the original after a period of time. do this from when they are young and htey will never question it. keep very special things only.

Display for a few days, or longer if its really impressive.
Place in a folder.
After a reasonable period of time, review the folder and decide what you'd like to keep.
Review again a year or two later, and cut down the pile a bit more.

It depends on your child's nature. I didn't think it correct to throw DS's artwork without his knowledge and he never wanted me to throw anything out so I explained to him that things get mouldy after a while, so once he brings a new picture we need to throw the old one out. He was happy with that arrangement and started taking them off the refrigerator on his own once it was there for approx. a week. Of course it also depends on the type of artwork in question, some are kept for longer and others put away.

The special ones we hang up on the playroom walls. We toss them after a while. You could also laminate the ones with pictures to hang in the succah next year.
