I want to try babywearing but I'm not ready to make it a major investment. I've read online that you can just make your own wrap from a long piece of fabric. These fabrics tend to come in 60" widths which is enough for at least 2, maybe 3 wraps. It would cost almost as much as buying a pre-made wrap except I'd end up with 2 or 3 identical ones.
So I'm wondering if anyone out there wants to share this project so that we each get 1 wrap for about 1/3 (probably less) the cost of buying a name-brand one. You can participate in choosing the fabric/color (I'm having a hard time choosing anyway!) and I don't mind taking care of the ordering, cutting, etc.
There's room for 2 people to join me in this since most fabrics come wide enough to make 3 wraps. If more people were interested, though, once I'm doing this anyway I wouldn't mind making extra, it would probably save on shipping for the fabric.
If participants live in a reasonable distance, we can pass it off by hand. Otherwise we can mail it. US only please. Total cost should be under $15 plus shipping if applicable.
OR if you've done this yourself and made a wrap and have the leftover fabric but no use for 2 identical pieces, I'd be happy to take it off your hands!

OPer,
check out http://www.thebabywearer.com/ for good advice and for a list of used carriers for sale
also, google your area and see if there is a local babywearing group. IT so they may have a lending library where you can try different types of carriers for $10/month

If you to a Jo-Ann's and use a coupon, you should be able to swing a mama made wrap for around $15-18 without sharing. You can buy stretchy cotton knit interlock (t-shirt material) or I used osnaberg (a beige cotton twilly looking material) and cotton or linengauze. You will need to cut them as they are too wide and hem the cotton materials (or use the nifty rubber band technique on mamatoto).
Hope that helps!

Yeah I have been to the babywearers forum, all I've seen for sale so far are the more expensive or structured kinds.
I don't really have time or patience for a lending library either. For $10 I'd rather just own my own homemade one for starters and if I want to go pro then I can look further.
I've already read up all over the internet about what kind of material, etc. I KNOW I will have to cut them because they come too wide, hence I am looking for someone to split it with.
So thanks for the friendly advice (really! not being snarky here!) but I will stick with my OP and ask if anyone here is interested in splitting this project with me...

Well, Seeker, actually you wouldn't have to cut it if you find 36 or 45 inch wide material. The first time I did this, I bought cotton gauze and did not hem or cut it and though it was wide, it was only a bit unwieldy. I've made three wraps with different materials.
If you like to BW, you might consider sticking one in your car, like I did with an extra. That's the only reason I suggested you keep all the material.
I won't bother you further though.
Yael

Are you making stretchy or non-stretchy?
For what size kid? I would contemplate selling one to you for $15 total (including shipping) -- PM me if interested.

Whoops, seems I started this thread and then abandoned it. I ended up getting one from a friend who didn't want it anymore. Would be willing to sell. PM me.
