DS is 6, and still not trained at night.
Not only that, but I dont' see an end in sight, as his pull-up is usually quite wet in the morning.

Is this somehting that kids just need to do on their own?

I have friends who wake up their kids every hour from the time the kids goes to sleep, + wake them up in middle of the night - but somehow I think that's "training the parent, not trainign the kid". (could be I'm also too lazy to do this! Smile )

Any suggestions?

Waking up the child is actually programming the childs brain to wake up when the need arises. It is tough for the parents but growing older without being trained for the night is tougher - Im in the same boat - Lots of luck to us!

OP here -
Growing, personally, I do not wake up every hour to go to the bathroom - anyone who does, should see a dr.!

have you actually tried this and met with successful results?

Explanation: I don't wake up my child every hour - this is what I do - wake up the child two hours after he/she falls asleep or right before I go to bed. Usually the child remains dry for the duration of the night after that. Sometimes if I am anyway awake at dawn I will wake the child again. This is not fool - proof but with persistence over time I am told I will meet with success unless the child has a problem which should than be adressed by a doctor.

I am in the same boat with my oldest son.

Our doctor said that a big component of this is genetic, and especially if the father was late to night train, it is biological. He said not to worry until 7 or possibly 8, but they have checked in on it every year. I wouldn't wake the poor child up--they need continuous sleep, too!

I have a 7 year old that had the same problem. He was actually wetting thru his pull-ups. My ped prescribed me a ugly tasting med which didn't work. He was upping it to 4 pieces a night, but it still didn't work. Then someone recommended the Malem ultimate bedwetting alarm. I bought it by bedwettingstore.com. It worked in less than a week. He started wetting every other night & then he was wet free, for 4 months already B'H. Hatzlucha!

I very strongly second that recommendation. my 6 year old was also wetting throug. He had his first dry night less than a weeka fter starting, and was finished with the alarm 2 months later (with 2 small trips in there). He was fine for 2 months, but then with the latedrinking/late bedtime of all of YT he needs to be retrained no, but its not nearly as ahrd.

As far as shabbos, just leave it off for 1 night. Use a pull up for the beginning weeks. As he gets better at staying dry, use underwear. offer a '2 straight weeks dry" reward, such as a special day trip, or a sleepover

I also recommend this highly. I worked great for my 5 year old DS. We only used it for a month, and since then he's been totally dry (for 3 years now). It is worth every cent.

I make them go before they go to sleep and then 2 hrs after I take them to the toilet. and then in the morning etc. it works for me. I did that with my then 5 yr old it worked. I did that method with 3 kids so far. now I am up to my 4.6 yr old and we are thinking of starting to night train him. it really works. and they dont really remember of being woken up.

I also used the Malem bedwetting alarm for my 9 year old ds it took 2-3 months but now he's dry b"h
I then tried to use is for my 4y dd but she woke up every hour because she was afraid of it - that its going to vibrate, and in the end she did wet so I stopped

Panda- Many Malem alarms have a choice to turn off the vibration -check the battery compartment.

Also, it takes a while to get results from the alarm, and most ped recommended waiting until a child is 5

For whomever uses the alarm: Are your children able to stop the urine flow when the alarm goes off (so they finish in the bathroom)?
My dc can't stop so easily and I'm wondering if the alarm would even help if they can't stop.

just turned five. DC overfills the diaper almost nightly (the bed gets wet) even with going to the bathroom before bed.

I'm going to have to try the Malem bedwetting alarm. Anyone know if you can get it in Israel? Anyone have one that they don't use anymore that they would like to sell?
My son is almost 5 and he soaks himself every night. Even though he is not yet old enough for this to be considered a problem by the doctors my mommy instincts tell me it is, because he wets himself 2-3 times a night and is horribly distressed by it, but can't stop.
I spoke to a specialist doctor about it and he says he can help but it costs a lot and seems like overkill for a kid his age.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to recommend this.
