Weird smelling cake

I just made a very simple choc cake and it has this weird amonia like smell to it. anyone ever had this before? I had it once before with a totally different recipe for carrot muffins... Scratching Head

Is the oil, or crisco fresh that you used fresh? Smell it to make sure it's not rancid.
