My almost 3 week old baby's umbillical cord stump just fell off. The area it was attached to looks very red and raw. It doesn't look like it's infected, just very red. Is this normal? I can't remember any of the others looking like that. It's not oozing anything, and while the stump was still there, there weren't any problems with it. Should I be concerned about the redness?

My recollection is that the area just under where the stump was is red for the day or two right after the stump falls off. But of course, if you are concerned, call the doctor and describe it on the phone.
Any redness extending out from the umbilical area, even to the sides, is an immediate drop everything and get the baby to the doctor/hospital.
