linen should be washed in the hottest possible water and bleached. It needs a very hot and heavy iron and should be ironed while still slightly damp for maximum steam. If you have a lightweight iron with a plastic body and teflon soleplate, forget it unless you're a big woman with lots of upper body strength to press down on the iron--or get your dh to do it!
Just curious--why did you buy dh a linen kittel instead of cotton or permanent press?
