My 16 month old needs new shoes right now, I have a pair that he can wear for shabbos, and I'm only interested in buying him one pair of shoes right now. Should I get him sneakers or sandals? If it's raining he probably wouldn't be walking outside anyway.

my vote is for sandals. its so much cooler in the heat and no sweating (yes, even little feet could sweat)
AND its much cuter! just make sure it has good support if he still needs it.

He's a pretty good walker at this point, he's even started running, how important is to get a "good" shoe at this point?

Good shoes are important for everyone.
Good shoes are not necessarily expensive. A podiatrist friend always recommended Payless for young kids.
And my vote is sneakers. They're more versatile, and protect his little toes.
