Our DS has been getting speech therapy for a few years. He is 6 yrs old. His articulation is terrible. Most people do not understand him aside for our family. The speech therapist said that since he can pronounce everything correctly upon demand the only thing to do is practice and more practice. The truth is, there were many sounds he could NOT make at all until recently so we do see an improvement. We are not sure that this is good advice at this point - to just correct him and have him practice speaking slow and clear. Has anyone been through this? Should the therapist be using a different method since we are interpreting for him over and over again? Just practice????

Sometimes a different therapist can bring a fresh approach.

Does the therapist do any hands on oral motor exercises with him, or give him oral motor homework?

Been in speeach with one of mine from age <2 - currently 6. Did oral-motor, prompt etc. Last year we were at the point of DC being able to produce the age appropriate sounds during therapy but not when talking with others and therapist also told us practice, practice is the key to continuing to produce the correct sounds. And with continued therapy we have seen this born out.
