I soak the tzitzis in regular, good detergent. I then rinse out the detergent and soak again in a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. Rinse well. I've heard the number 1 part hp to 9 parts water. The hydrogen peroxide whitens the wool.
I do everything by hand, so the strings don't get tangled.
I've washed a tallis in a machine like this: (It's complicated, so I don't do on regular tzitzis)
Soak with OxiClean and Woolite for a few hours. Rub gently on stains.
Put strings into a white sock and close tightly. Place in machine with regular detergent, Iron Out and milk and put on a gentle cycle.
