Out of the blue, last week I found little black specks on some of my silver-plated flatware when I took it out of the dishwasher. It looks almost like mildew and it doesn't come off. I tried sending it through the dishwasher again, using soap, a scrubby, scratching with my fingernail - nothing gets it off.
Anyone have any idea where this came from and how to get rid of it? I can't set the table using spoons and forks that look mildewed...

I don't think youre supposed to put silver plated flatware in the dishwasher. Did you try polishing it?

I've been putting them in the dishwasher for seven years now. You think the silver is starting to come off?
Polishing doesn't help.

silver-plated has a short life span ... but just in case they're spots & not peelings ... soak them in a disposable aluminum pan along with hot water & baking soda

Well I don't know about silver plated but DH's kiddush cup/plate is very expensive solid silver and I have noted a couple of spots like that on the plate. So I don't think it's a quality issue. No idea what it is or how to get rid of it, I have taken a lot of care to rinse and dry it right away every time we use it
