I am currently painting my house, I need to decide on the type of finish. Lots of people are telling me to use pearl finish, cuz its less of a smell, practical. (btw, I am 36 weeks pregnant). My painter is telling me to go with the oil finish. I dont know what to do

Go with what's best for the long-term, not the short-term. You don't want to have regrets later.

oil finish will absolutely be horrid ... nobody needs the shine - it will not be comforting to the home

I used the pearl finish on my kitchen & am very happy with it.

most are recommending I use the satin/oil finish. It lasts longer, and is washable. I'll talk to painter tom again. Thanks everyone!

Don't water based (non oil) paints come in satin finish, too?

oil paint smells ... has a longer drying time & is messy to use - it might be good in a kitchen or bathroom - but I would still go with latex semi-gloss rather than oils - but certainly not a living room or bedroom

latex paint comes in varying finishes from flat/satin/eg-shel/semi-gloss/gloss

usage also depends on how smooth or bumpy your walls are & what area of the house you're painting - shiny paints will show every imperfection - but they're good for woodwork

You can use a water base paint that dries as strong as a oil paint like Advance from benjamin moore
