Whenever food gets cooked, the whole house smells. The vent hood over the oven makes a lot of noise but doesn't work and my landlord isn't going to fix it.
There is no door to the kitchen, and even with kitchen and upstairs windows open, the smell can linger a loooong time. ( esp if onions were used) and esp on the staircase that is closed in.
I am pregnant with HG and the smells r making me so sick!
So firstly, how to prevent the smells from wafting upstairs, and if I can't prevent it- how do I get it out?! I had the windows open for hours and froze- still reeks....

Get a portable fan and put it on exhaust in your kitchen window. Use it every time you cook.
Besha'ah tova! I hope you feel better soon.

use a fan & an open window to blow the odors away from the kitchen & outside
maybe do this while cooking to prevent the build-up from spreading to upstairs
fix the vent hood fan yourself ?

Thought of a fan but how do I get it to blow the smell out of the window not just around the room?

If your fan has two settings, choose the exhaust setting.
If it doesn't, turn the fan so the air blows out the room--out the window, instead of into the room from outside.

Boiling cinnamon or other aromatic spices in water on the stove while cooking can help a bit. Sort of masks other cooking smells.
